2001 ALS Liszt Bicentennial Festival Update

The ALS Liszt Bicentennial Festival (1811-2011) will take place February 17 - 19, 2011, hosted by Dr. Richard Zimdars at the University of Georgia. The Festival will present the world premiere of William Bolcom's Laura Sonnets, a song cycle based on five Petrarch sonnets. Commissioned by ALS in honor of the bicentennial of Liszt's birth, it will be sung by baritone Thomas Hampson as part of his recital at the festival.

The first performance of a work for solo piano chosen as the winner of the ALS Bicentennial Composition Competition will also be given. The $4000 prize is provided by Steinway & Sons. The American Liszt Society wishes to thank Steinway & Sons and the University of Georgia for their support of the competition.

An ALS-sponsored 2-CD set of rare Liszt performances by three recipients of the ALS Medal - Claudio Arrau, Jorge Bolet, and Gunnar Johansen - will be on sale for the first time.

Noted Liszt authority Alan Walker will present the $2000 prize to the recipient of the American Liszt Society Alan Walker Book Award.
